Ellis Schwartz's Record-Setting Day Powers Eagles Past Oglethorpe, 13-2, in Finale

Senior Ellis Schwartz had a monster day at the plate, leading the Emory University baseball team to a 13-2 win over Oglethorpe University in the season finale between the Atlanta-based programs. Schwartz's record-setting day featured three home runs and eight runs batted in, both setting records for a single-game in team history.

The senior centerfielder opened the scoring with solo shot to right center in home half of the first inning. After Oglethorpe tied the score in the second, Schwartz began the scoring in the second, working a bases-loaded walk to start a four-run frame. Sophomore Jack Halloran and seniors Tyler McLoughlin, Jack Masonis would follow with RBIs in the second.

Schwartz's second home run of the day came in the third that busted the game open. Freshman Zach Wasserlauf drew a walk before junior Jacob Grossman singled two batters later. Schwartz then deposited a blast near the scoreboard in right to make it an 8-1 ballgame.

Schwartz and the eagles were not done yet, cashing in with another four spot in the fifth. Sophomore Josh Katz singled to lead off the fifth with Grossman earning a walk in the next plate appearance, leading to Schwartz to step to the plate with a chance at history. After watching the first three pitches go by, Schwartz turned loose on a 2-1 offering and watched the ball sail over the right field fence for the first three home run performance by an Eagle in program history.

The three round trippers and eight RBI were more than enough to help his freshman teammate Josh Zuckerman earn the win in his collegiate debut as Zuckerman worked five innings, allowing a solo run on four hits. He struck out four and did not issue a free pass.

Following the weekend sweep of the Stormy Petrels, the Eagles (4-2) will be back at Chappell Park Tuesday afternoon when Rose-Hulman visits Atlanta for a mid-week matchup.
