Late Rally Spoils Upset Bid for Emory Baseball over #1 Birmingham-Southern

The Emory University baseball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped Friday night, falling to No. 1 ranked Birmingham-Southern College, 12-8, at Striplin Field in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Panthers scored 12 straight runs including a six-spot in the seventh inning to upend the Eagles in the first of two games on back-to-back days between the regional rivals. With the defeat, Emory slips to 9-4 on the season while BSC improves to 16-1.

The Eagles did all their damage in the third inning, capitalizing on two Panther errors to bat around the lineup and stake claim to an 8-0 lead. Junior Tyler McLoughlin and sophomore Blake Dincman had the two big blows in the frame as both went yard, combining to drive in five of the eight runs.

Despite the early hole, BSC showed why they're considered one of the top teams in the country as the Panthers chipped away at the deficit with one run in the third, three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth while holding the Eagles off the scoreboard. Trailing 8-5, Birmingham-Southern sent all nine batters to the plate in the home half of the seventh, scoring six times, to seize control of the game.

After taking the lead, BSC's Hansen McCown retired six of the final seven hitters that stepped to the plate for the Eagles with only junior Jacob Grossman reaching base with a one-out walk in the eighth.

The comeback spoiled a great outing from senior Joey Bock who struck out a career-high nine batters across 5+ innings as he was saddled with the no decision.

The two programs will be back at it on the diamond Saturday afternoon as the two-game series shifts to Chappell Park for a 2:00 PM first pitch.
