NYU Takes UAA Opener from Emory Baseball

The Emory University baseball team dropped the University Athletic Association opener to New York University Friday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

The Violets snagged game one of the four-game series by a 4-3 margin to improve to 8-5 while the loss moves Emory to 11-9 on the year.

NYU had back-to-back two-run innings in the fourth and fifth frames as all seven runs in the game were scored within the game's first five innings.

Sophomore Jack Halloran provided the game's first run with a run-scoring double in the second before NYU struck for two in the top half of the fourth.

The Eagles responded right away in the home half of the fourth as freshman Zach Wasserlauf and junior Jacob Grossman smacked back-to-back home runs to deep left to push Emory back in front.

However, NYU went ahead in the fifth as Kosta Mocklis delivered the go-ahead two-run single for the final scoring play of the afternoon.

The Eagles had chances over the final five frames as the game-tying run reach base each inning but could not come around to score.

Senior Joey Bock took the loss as he allowed two earned runs over four-plus innings. Junior Derek Livingston was strong in relief, tossing four scoreless frames, scattering five hits while striking out three. Senior Mike Golob was equally impressive in his one inning of work, escaping a bases loaded and no outs situation in the ninth to keep it a one-score game.

Junior Tyler McLoughlin picked up another three-hit performance, while each of Wasserlauf, Grossman and senior Henry Pelinski had two hits on the day.

The Eagles and Violets continue the opening UAA series on Saturday in Atlanta with doubleheader scheduled to get underway at 12:00 PM.
