Baseball's Late-Inning Comeback Falls Short at Oglethorpe

Baseball's Late-Inning Comeback Falls Short at Oglethorpe

The Emory University baseball team dropped a mid-week game to crosstown rival Oglethorpe University, 10-9, Tuesday night at Hermance Stadium in Brookhaven.

For the second straight game, the Eagles brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth inning but the Stormy Petrels would prevail by striking out the final two Emory hitters. With the loss, the Eagles slip to 1-3 while Oglethorpe stands at 1-0.

The Emory offense was clicking in the early stages, scoring two runs off three different Stormy Petrel hurlers in three consecutive innings as the Eagles held a 6-3 lead through the three frames. Junior Matthew Sicoli opened the scoring with an RBI double that brought around sophomore Zach Wasserlauf before he scored himself on a throwing error later in the inning. In the second inning, Wasserlauf and freshman Jake Lawson each had run-scoring hits prior to junior Blake Dincman and senior Steven Hunt providing the offense in the third.

Senior Connor Skertich drew the start and escaped early trouble as he worked his way through a bases loaded, no outs situation in the first inning. Oglethorpe touched up Skertich, however, in the second by plating three runs on three hits and taking advantage of two Emory errors.

The Stormy Petrels added another big frame in the fourth with five runs against Skertich and reliever Bennett Speicher before tacking on two more in the sixth to hold a 10-6 lead.

The Eagles began their late inning comeback in the eighth inning, cutting the deficit to 10-9 with three runs. Sophomore Adrian Armstrong drew a pinch-hit HBP to force in the first run before senior Walker Woolf brought in sophomore Adam Geller in his pinch-hit spot. Two batters later, Dincman scampered home on a wild pitch to bring the Eagles to within one.

In the ninth, Sicoli reached base with one out as he was able to reach as the throw from shortstop pulled the first baseman off the bag. Junior Jack Halloran was plunked in the next plate appearance, giving the Eagles two runners on with only one out. Unfortunately, Oglethope's Colby James sent down both Geller and Dincman on strikes to end the ballgame.

Wasserlauf finished the night 3-for-6 at the dish with two doubles and one RBI. Lawson, Hunt and Sicoli each picked up two hits and drove in one run. Despite totaling 12 hits and eight walks, the Eagles left 15 runners on base.

Emory will look to snap its current two-game skid this weekend when the team travels to Montgomery, Alabama for the Firehouse Classic at Huntingdon. The Eagles will play Virginia Wesleyan, MUW and Huntingdon on consecutive days in the 2024 edition of the tournament.
