Emory Baseball Downs Oglethorpe, 5-3, in Non-Conference Finale

The Emory University baseball team returned to the diamond Tuesday afternoon after a nine-day layoff and defeated crosstown rival Oglethorpe University, 5-3, in the final non-conference game of the regular season.

The Eagles used six different pitchers to limit the Stormy Petrels to three runs across the nine frames and will carry a 20-14-1 record into the UAA finale this weekend. With the loss, Oglethorpe dropped to 16-22 ahead of the upcoming SAA conference tournament.

Sophomore Adam Geller notched the win as he allowed two unearned runs in his three relief innings and junior Bennett Speicher nailed down his third save with a scoreless ninth. Junior Ryan Reynolds worked two innings in the start, retiring six of the seven batters he faced in two shutout frames. Junior Ryan Kelly also impressed on the rubber, striking out all three Stormy Petrels he faced in a clean eighth.

Freshman Jake Lawson highlighted the Emory offense on Tuesday as he went 3-for-4 and had the lone RBI base hit, tying the game in the fourth with a two-out single.

With the score tied at 2-2, graduate student Nick Wilson and sophomore Adrien Armstrong put the Eagles ahead in the fifth. Wilson brough in junior Jack Halloran with a sac fly before Armstrong plated Conley with a ground out.

Oglethorpe got a run back in the sixth but sophomore Zach Wasserlauf gave Emory another two-run cushion in the seventh with his run-scoring ground out in the seventh.

With the lead, Speicher, Kelly and senior Zac Schultz retired the final nine batters of the game in the seventh, eighth and ninth.

The Eagles look to close out the 2024 regular season with a four-game set against Brandeis University. Game one of the series is slated for 3:00 PM on Friday.
