EMORY RANKS PROMINENTLY IN GOLF DIGEST COLLEGE GOLF GUIDE

The Emory University golf program drew high marks in the 2007-08 College Golf Guide released by Golf Digest Magazine.  The third-annual College Golf Guide package is featured in Golf Digest's September issue (on newsstands August 7).

Emory was ranked 29th in the nation among all NCAA schools and was the second-ranked Division III program in the "Balanced" ranking, which measures students who place equal emphasis on academics and sports.  Categories that were taken into account in the "Balanced" ranking included team adjusted scoring average, player growth, academics, climate and facilities and coaching.  Stanford, Duke and the University of Southern California held down the top three spots in the "Balanced" ranking and Claremont-McKenna was the only Division III program to be ranked ahead of Emory, coming in at the No. 17 position.  Over 790 schools were analyzed in this category with the top 400 earning a ranking.  According to Golf Digest, the "Balanced" ranking is the best indicator for the majority of young men heading off to college

Emory was ranked 23rd out of the 146 schools (all division) surveyed in the "Academics First" ranking which applies to students who are focused on education but still desire to play competitive golf.  Utilizing a new formula from a year ago, "Academics First" utilizes statistics compiled from U.S. News & World Report's 2007 guidebook, America's Best Colleges.  Emory was the No. 3-ranked Division III program, behind only Claremont-McKenna (#6) and Pomona-Pitzer (#13).

EMORY GOLF TEAM TO COMPETE AT GREENSBORO INVITATIONAL

The Emory University men's golf team continues the fall portion of its schedule when it participates at the Greensboro College Invitational next Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 2-3).  The Invitational will be held at the Meadowlands Golf Club in Winston-Salem, NC.  Designed by Hale Irwin, the Meadowlands is a 6,706-yard, par-72 course. Joining Emory in the Invitational will be approximately 15 teams including Division III national powers, Guilford College, Methodist College, Huntingdon College and Oglethorpe.

Head Coach Mike Philips hopes that the momentum gained from the squad's playoff win against Oglethorpe in the Rhodes College Invitational, Sept. 17-18, can carry over into this weekend.  In the Rhodes Invitational, junior Drew Harker (Barrington, RI) paced Emory's efforts, claiming medalist honors out of 61 players with a two-over par score of 146 at the Tunica National Course (MS) while sophomore Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) captured third place with a six-over mark of 150.

"The course this weekend is similar to our home course in that an errant shot is very penalizing," Emory University Head Coach Mike Phillips said.  "We have not fared too well as a team at the Meadowlands in the recent past but I believe that the team is playing with a lot of confidence.  We are looking to continue to play well after a great start at the Rhodes Invitational and we will be tested by a much stronger field."

Last year Guilford captured the team title while Huntingdon College took home runner-up honors.  Emory finished seventh out of the 15-team field.

Entering the final round, Emory trailed Oglethorpe by five shots (305-300) but ended up shooting 299 while the Petrels finished at 304 forcing the playoff.

Emory junior Drew Harker (Barrington, RI) claimed medalist honors with his even-par 72 today giving him a two-day score of 146.  Harker's performance earned him all-tournament honors as did sophomore Jeremy Evans' (Palm Harbor, FL) 36-hole effort of 150 (75-75).  Senior Rodrigo Olivero (Guatemala City, Guatemala) carded a final round of 76 and finished at 154 (78-76) while sophomore Chip Tallman (Alpharetta, GA) shot his second consecutive 78 to finish at 156 (78-78).  Sophomore Patrick Cohn (St. Louis, MO) bounced back from an opening-day score of 81, shooting 76 to finish at 157 (81-76).  Sophomore Brent Josephson (Hidden Hills, CA) competed as an individual and finished with an 80 in his final round, 167 for the tourney.

"The guys hung in well and battled some breezy and wet weather," Emory Head Coach Mike Phillips said.  "Everybody pitched in and contributed, especially during the playoff holes.  The way the players picked each other up was a great example of golf being a team game."

Emory continues the fall portion of its schedule, Oct. 2-3, when it participates in the Greensboro College Invitational.

EMORY GOLF TEAM OPENS FALL SEASON AT RHODES COLLEGE INVITATIONAL

The Emory University men's golf team opens the fall portion of its schedule this coming Sunday and Monday (Sept. 17-18) when it competes at the Rhodes College Invitational.  The Invitational will be played at the Tunica (MS) National Golf Resort.  Other teams competing include Rhodes College, Oglethorpe, Millsaps, Christian Brothers University, Hendrix, Sewanee and Centre.

Head Coach Mike Philips enters his 24th season in charge of the Eagles program and returns a number of key personnel from last year's squad that posted a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Division III championships.  While fielding a relatively young squad with just one senior on the roster, Phillips can count on some tested performers.

Sophomore Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) and junior Drew Harker (Barrington, RI) both distinguished themselves last season are the top returning players with scores of 76.2 and 76.7 per-round averages.  Evans was the University Athletic Association Rookie of the Year while Harker brought home first team all-conference recognition.  The squad's lone senior, Rodrigo Olivero, averaged 77.2 strokes per outing over the course of 25 rounds.  Two sophomores, Patrick Cohn (St. Louis, MO) and William Tallman (Alpharetta, GA)  earned spots on the travel squad and will be put to the test on the 7,210-yard, par-72 course.

"This tournament will be our first opportunity to match-up with highly ranked Oglethorpe and tournament host Rhodes, said Phillips, who has directed Emory to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances.  "It will also test a young team on a pretty good golf course that is well-bunkered and that has numerous water hazards."
