EMORY GOLF TEAM OPENS FALL SEASON AT RHODES COLLEGE INVITATIONAL

(Sept. 20) - The No. 11-ranked Emory University men's golf team opens the fall portion of its schedule this coming Sunday and Monday (Sept. 23-24) when it competes at the Rhodes College Invitational.  The Invitational will be played at the 7,155-yards, par-72 Tunica (MS) National Golf Resort.

This year's field includes four teams that are ranked among the top 10 NCAA Division III teams in the nation including Oglethorpe (No.3), Huntingdon (No.6), Texas Lutheran (No. 9) and Rhodes College (No. 10).  Other teams competing will be Bethel, Christian Brothers, Hendrix, Maryville and McMurry University.

Head Coach Mike Philips enters his 25th season in charge of the Eagles' program and returns a number of key personnel from last year's squad that posted a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Division III championships.  The Eagles lost just one senior, Rod Olivero, from last year's team and Drew Harker enters the 2007-08 campaign as the lone senior on this year's squad.  Junior Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL), a 2007 PING All-South Region honoree, is back in the fold and ranks as the team's top returning scorer (75.1). He is joined by sophomores Raffi Simel (Greensboro, NC) and John Ross (N. Barrington, IL) as other vets looking to be key contributors in 2007-08.

The Eagles enter the Rhodes College Invitational as defending champs after edging Oglethorpe after six playoff holes.  Emory went into last year's final round trailing the Petrels by five shots but recovered to force the playoff.  Harker (Barrington, RI) claimed medalist honors after posting a two-round score of 146.

Head Coach Mike Phillips enters his 25th season at the helm of the Eagles' program with a team that is slated to return 11 letterwinners from a year ago.  Included among the returnees is junior Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, Fla.) who finished No. 2 on the team last year in stroke average (75.1) en route to All-South Region honors.
