The Emory University golf team used a combination experience and youth to turn in a good 2008-09 season. Competing in the always tough South Region, which boasted four of the nation's top 10 D-III programs, the Eagles closed out the year with the following accomplishments.
* A No. 16 national ranking in the final
Golf World/NIKE Golf Division III Poll.
* The school's seventh straight and 14th-ever bid to the NCAA D-III
Championships where it posted a 16th-place finish.
* Placing three players on the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America
Scholar Team, seniors Jeremy Evans and Patrick Coach, along with
junior John Ross.
Individually, freshman Ryan Dagerman concluded the
year with the team's best scoring average at 76.5 strokes per
round. A First Team All-University Athletic Association honoree
after a team-leading, third-place finish at the conference
championship, Dagerman was the club's top shooter in a pair of
tourneys which also included the 54-hole Macdonald Cup. His top
18-hole effort was a two-under 70 on the first day of the NCAA
Division III Championship which tied the school record for an
individual low score for that event.
Senior Jeremy Evans capped off a memorable
four-year career by finishing right behind Dagerman with a 77.3
strokes per round effort. The four-year veteran finished as the
squad's top performer in four tournaments including the Oglethorpe
Fall Invitational where his ninth place finish out of 65 players
earned him UAA Player of the Week honors. He also paced the squad
at the Jekyll Island Invitational where his 54-hole score of 227
ranked him 28th out of 150 players. Career-wise, Evans finished his
four-year career No. 2 on Emory's career scoring average list
(75.94). He fired 14 rounds of par or better .and turned in 15
top-10 finishes.
Patrick Cohn was another senior who ended his
Emory career, seeing action in all ten of the team's tournaments.
Cohn recorded a 77.9 strokes per round average. The St. Louis, Mo.,
native led the team and finished 25th out of 106 contestants at the
Rhodes College Fall Classic with a 36-hole mark of 150 (78-72). A
Second Team All-UAA honoree, he finished his career ranked 13th on
the school's career scoring average list with a 77.26 strokes per
round showing.
Sophomore Daniel Kmetz emerged as a key
contributor, playing in a total of six tournaments and averaging
77.7 strokes per round. Kmetz captured First Team All-UAA honors
after coming through with a fourth-place finish at the UAA
Championships and paced all Eagle competitors at the Emory Spring
Invitational.
Junior Charles Raindre, a first-year member of the
program, made his impact felt as he fired the team's low round of
the year with his 66 during the second day of action
at the Gordin Collegiate tying the school record for low score
for 18 holes. Raindre would go onto to tie for medalist honors at
the Gordin Collegiate (was defeated in a playoff) with his 36-hole
score of 137 estbalishing a school mark. Raindre, who averaged 77.7
strokes in 11 rounds over five tournaments, also paced the Emory
contingent at the O'Briant Memorial.
