The No. 8-ranked Emory University golf team continues its spring
season on Monday and Tuesday (Mar. 8-9) when it competes at the
Lonnie Barton Memorial Invitational. The 36-hole tourney will
be played at the 7,016-yard, par-72 Savannah Quarters Country
Club.
The Eagles of head coach Mike Phillips will be one of eight teams
vying for the championship. Other squads taking part include
host Long Island University, Fairfield University, Robert Morris,
Longwood, High Point, Bryant and Laval. Longwood enters
this event as defending champion after topping a 10-team field last
year.
Emory is coming off a seventh-place finish out of 15 teams at the
Callaway Collegiate Invitational (Mar. 1-2). Sophomore
Ryan Dagerman finished as Emory's top performer,
totaling a seven-over par 151 (75-76), good for a 12th-place tie in
the 85-player field. Senior Shane Miller was next
on the Eagles' leader board with a 157 (76-81) that tied him for
the 31st position.
The tournament is named after Lonnie Barton, who served as golf
coach at Long Island University for eight years. Barton
passed away in 2004 following a three-year bout with cancer.
