Individual Scores
The No. 10-ranked Emory University golf team turned in an
outstanding performance on the opening day of the NCAA Division III
Championships and holds down third place out of 40 teams.
Emory played its first 18 holes on the 6,800-yard, par-72
West Course at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, NC.
The Eagles of head coach Mike Phillips fired a team score of 289
and trail only No. 9 Oglethorpe and top-ranked St. John’s
University (MN), both of whom posted marks of 286 on the West
Course. Greensboro College, another squad that took on the
West Course, registered a 291 while Texas Lutheran checked in at
292 after opening on the East Course.
Emory’s effort on Tuesday established a school mark for the
lowest round at the NCAA Championships, bettering the previous
standard of 292 set in 2009 and 2004.
Junior Ryan Dagerman and senior Charles Raindre provided the Eagles
with some stellar play with both carding a two-under par 70, good
for a fifth-place tie on the individual leader board.
Dagerman finished his round with six birdies including a stretch on
the back nine where he birdied four of five holes. Raindre
was steady with three birdies, one bogey and 14 pars on the
day. Dagerman’s and Raindre’s scores tied the
Emory record for the individual low round at the NCAA Championships
with the duo recording the fifth and sixth rounds of that
score. Other past rounds of 70 were turned in by Dagerman
(2009), Mike Lebow (2006), Stephen Davey (1996) and Fraser
Mackechine (1997). The best score of the day came from
Oglethorpe’s Craig Stevenson who turned in blistering showing
of 66.
Freshman Johnathan Chen came through with a two-over par 74 while
sophomore David Collura rounded out the team’s scorers with a
75. Collura had an interesting round, shaking off a quadruple
bogey on hole No. 9 followed by a double bogey on 10, to birdie
four of his final seven holes of the afternoon. Senior Nick
Szem competed and totaled a 77.
Emory will play Wednesday’s second round on the 7,045-yard,
par-72 East Course. The Eagles will tee off at 10:20 a.m.
After tomorrow’s action, the field will be cut to 15 teams
for the final 36 holes.
