The No. 8-ranked Emory University golf team closed out the fall portion of its 2011-12 season with a fifth-place finish out of 17 teams at the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Fall Invitational. The 36-hole event was played at the 6,848-yard, par-71 Royal Lakes Golf Course in nearby Flowery Branch.
After posting an opening-round score of 302, the Eagles bounced back and fashioned a Tuesday score of 293, giving them a two-day total of 595. No. 20 Christopher Newport brought home the team trophy with a 585 (292-293), two shots ahead of runner-up and No. 6 Huntingdon. No. 2 Methodist University captured third place at 588 (302-286) while No. 1 Greensboro checked in at fourth with a 592 (297-295).
Senior Ryan Dagerman (Dallas, TX) used a fine second-round score with of two-under par 69, his best mark of the fall, to finish at 142, good for second place in the 98-player field. By virtue of his performance, Dagerman captured a spot on the all-tournament team. Sophomore Jonathan Chen (Sugar Land, TX) was the next Emory player of the leader board at 149 (72-77), good for 20th place. Sophomore Alec Berens rebounded from a first-day 83 to card an even-par 71, leaving him at 154. Senior Michael Mullavey (Dunstable, MA) closed out the team's scorers with a 155 (76-79). Also competing for the Eagles was senior Nick Szem (Wall, NJ) who registered a 157 (81-76).
Claiming medalist honors was Joe Evans of Christopher Newport with an effort of 138 (66-72).
Emory had three players competing as individuals -- sophomore Will Roth (Niwot, CO) and freshman Alex Wunderlich, (Ann Arbor, MI), both of whom shot 158, and freshman Aaron Weiner (Newark, DE) who totaled a 162.
Emory packs its clubs away until Mar. 5-6, 2012, when it competes at the Wynlakes Wynter Nationals in Montgomery, Alabama.
