Emory Golf Captures UAA Championship

Emory Golf Captures UAA Championship

The No. 18-ranked Emory University golf team closed out a successful performance at the University Athletic Golf Championships, capturing its second straight and 14th conference title. The 36-hole event was played at the 6,768, par-72 RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Florida.

The Eagles shot a second-day score of 292 to finish the tourney with a 581.  Finishing runner-up at 586 (297-289) was the University of Rochester.  Carnegie Mellon was third at 618 (308-310) while New York University rounded out the field with a 637 (316-321).  Emory's final total established a conference record at the Championships, bettering the previous mark of 583 set by Rochester in 1989.

Senior Ryan Dagerman spearheaded the Emory effort at the Championships with his one-under par mark of 143 (72-71) placing him second overall in the 28-player field.  Sophomore Johnathan Chen tied for third place with an even-par 144 (72-72) while freshman Alex Wunderlich turned in a fine effort in his initial appearance at the UAAs, with his 146 (73-73) ranking fifth on the leader board.  Junior David Collura rounded out the team's scorers with a 150 (74-76), good for sixth place, while senior Nick Szem finished tied for seventh with a 151 (72-79).  Dagerman, Chen and Wunderlich all garnered All-UAA First Team honors while Collura and Szem were Second Team All-UAA honorees.  In addition, Wunderlich was tabbed as the UAA Rookie of the Year, the third Emory player to earn that honor since it was instituted in 2001.

Taking home medalist honors for the second straight season was Rochester sophomore Nicholas Palladino, who set an UAA Championships record with a score of 137 (68-69). Palladino's effort surpassed the previous standard of 139 set by Lee Palms in 1989.

Emory returns to action this Friday through Sunday (Mar. 16-18) when it competes in the prestigious Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational.
