11th-Ranked Emory Golf Earns Bid To NCAA D-III Championships

11th-Ranked Emory Golf Earns Bid To NCAA D-III Championships

The No. 11-ranked Emory University golf team has been selected to compete in the 2011 NCAA Division III Golf Championships.  The Eagles are one of 41 squads vying for the team title that will be played May 15-18 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Serving as co-host institutions for this year's Championships are Oglethorpe University and the Central Florida Sports Commission.

Emory was one of three teams selected from Pool B which consists of independent institutions, and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification.  A total of 31 conferences were awarded automatic bids while seven berths were reserved for Pool C - schools from automatic qualifying conferences that are not conference champs and any remaining Pool B teams.  In addition, five individuals from non-qualifying teams were chosen to participate bringing the field to 210 players.

The first two days of competition will be played on both the 6,950-yard, par-72 Las Colinas Course and the 6,850-yrad, par-72 El Campeon.  The field will then be cut to 15 teams and five individuals after the first two rounds.  The final two rounds will be played on the El Campeon Course.

Emory will be making its 10th straight NCAA appearance and 17th overall in the 27-year history of the program. Last season, the Eagles posted an eighth-place finish at nationals, which were held at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, NC. Emory's effort at last year's event marked the first top-10 showing by the program since 2006,

The top-11 ranked teams will be among those in the hunt for this year's national crown.  Methodist  holds down the No. 1 spot in the Golf World/NIKE Coaches' Poll while Oglethorpe,  Guilford, UT-Tyler and Redlands round out the top five.

Greensboro College enters this year's Championships looking to defend its title after posting a six-shot advantage over runner-up Illinois Wesleyan.
