Emory Golf Team Concludes Opening Day At NCAA Championships

Team & Individual Scores

The No. 11-ranked Emory University golf team finds itself in 17th place out of 41 teams after the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships.  The 72-hole tourney is being played at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

Emory's first 18 holes of the Championships were played on the 6,850-yrad, par-72 El Campeon Course where it shot a score of 307.  The Eagles' first-day effort was the fifth-best showing out of the 20 teams that competed on that course. Holding down first place after the first day of action is No. 2-ranked Oglethorpe which shot a three-under 285 on the  6,950-yard, par-72 Las Colinas Course.  Close on the heels of Oglethorpe is No. 9 Claremont-Mudd Scripps with a mark of 289.  No. 16 Christopher Newport is third at 290 while No. 1 Methodist (291) and No. 5 Redlands (295) round out the top five teams.  All of the top eight teams after the first day of competition played on Los Colinas.

Emory senior Ryan Dagerman paced the team's effort, firing an even par 72 that ties him for ninth place out of 209 players.  Dagerman's score tied for the top individual performance of those who played on El Campeon, finishing his day with three birdies and three bogeys. Sophomore Johnathan Chen and junior David Collura each carded rounds of 78 while senior Nick Szem closed out the team's scorers with a 79.  Freshman Alex Wunderlich shot an 86.

Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethorpe and Brad Shigezawa of CMS are tied for the individual lead with both players playing the Los Colinas Course and registering four-under par 68.

Action resumes with the second round taking place on Wednesday.  Teams that played El Campeon on Tuesday move to Los Colinas while the squads that were on Los Colinas switch to El Campeon.  After the second round, the field will be cut to 15 teams.
