Emory Golf Winds Up Play At NCAA D-III Championships

Emory Golf Winds Up Play At NCAA D-III Championships

The Emory University golf team closed out its participation at the 2012 NCAA D-III Championships with a 17th-place finish.  The 72-hole tourney is being played at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

The Eagles, who started Wednesday's action in 17th place, shot a score of 297 on the 6,950-yard, par-72 Las Colinas Course to finish with a 36-hole mark of 604.  Emory missed out on qualifying for the last rounds two of play by just two strokes with Wittenberg and Greensboro tying for the final two spots at 602.  St. Thomas (MN) finished one shot ahead of Emory with a 603 (top 15 teams make the cut for final 36 holes).

Senior Ryan Dagerman continued his strong play, posting a one-over par 73 that left his two-day score at 145, good for an eighth-place tie on the leader board.  Dagerman will continue to compete at the Championships as an individual with the top six players from teams who failed to make the cut eligible to play on.

Sophomore Johnathan Chen came through with a solid second-round performance, with his one-over par 73 giving him a 151.  Rounding out the Emory contingent was junior David Collura (78-79—157), freshman Alex Wunderlich (86-72--158) and senior Nick Szem (79-84—163).  Wunderlich's even-par 72 on Wednesday tied the best performance by an Emory player during the tourney.

The team leader after 36 holes is No. 2-ranked Oglethorpe at 577 (285-292).  The Stormy Petrels have a 14-shot bulge over Methodist University and 18-shot advantage over third place holders Texas-Tyler and Guilford.

The final two rounds of the Championships will be contested on the 6,850-yard, par-72 El Campeon Course.
