Emory Golf Tied For Eighth After First Round Of Spring Invitational

The No. 7-ranked Emory men's golf team finds itself tied for eighth place after the opening day of its Spring Invitational.  The 36-hole event is being played at the 6,860-yard, par 72 Druid Hills Golf Club.

The Eagles posted a first-round score of 304, tying it with Rhodes College.  Holding down the top spot in the 15-team field after Monday's action is No. 1-ranked Methodist University with a mark of three-under 285.  No. 2 Oglethorpe University is just two shots behind the Monarchs while No. 24 Christopher Newport stands third at 292.  Berry College (298) and Huntingdon College (299) are fourth and fifth, respectively.

Sophomore Alex Wunderlich paced the Eagles' effort with a one-under 71, good for a third-place tie in the 77-player field.   Wunderlich shot an even-par 36 on the front nine and fought off a double bogey and bogey with four birdies over the back nine.   Juniors Alex Berens and Johnathan Chen were next up on Emory's scoresheet with 77s that place them in a tie for 37th position.  Senior David Collura rounded out the team's scorers with a 79.

Senior Brian Jaeger of Christopher Newport led all players on Monday with a solid score of three-under 69.   Jaeger got out the gate slowly, bogeying two of the first five holes before regrouping to chalk up four birdies and an eagle over the next 13 holes.   Senior Eric Quinn of Oglethorpe stands second, just one shot behind Jaeger.   A total of seven players broke par during the first round including Methodist's Jeff Wells, Andrew Bateman and Mike Wesko, all of who totaled 71.

Emory's "B" Team is in 10th place after recording a 308.  Freshman Max Goodley was that squad's leader with a three-over par 75.

Action at the Emory Spring Invitational concludes on Tuesday.
