Emory Golf Turns in Strong Second Round At NCAA D-III Championships

Results After Two Rounds

The No. 9-ranked Emory men's golf team turned in a solid effort during the second round of play at the NCAA Division III Championships and stands in ninth place after 36 holes.  The 72-hole event is being held at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Florida.

Competing on the 6,854-yard, par-71 Raven Course, Emory posted a team score of 296, leaving it tied with the  University of LaVerne with a two-day score of 599.   The Eagles' performance on Tuesday tied for the third-lowest round of the 20 teams that competed on the Raven and also represented the program's fifth-lowest mark at the NCAAs in school annals.  Transylvania (288-291) and the University of Texas at Tyler (293-286) are deadlocked for the top spot at 579 while Methodist University holds down the No. 3 position at 585 (290-295).  Illinois Wesleyan (589) is fourth and rounding out the top five is Claremont-Mudd Scripps at 595.

Junior Johnathan Chen spearheaded the Emory effort on Tuesday, firing a one-under par 70 that left him at 145 through two rounds, good for an 11th-place tie on the leaderboard.  Chen was a model of consistency, posting two birdies and two bogeys on the day, and he walked off the course having tied the school's record for the low individual round at nationals.   Sophomore Alex Wunderlich bolstered the cause with a two-over par 73, giving him a 36-hole showing of five-over par 148, good for 23rd place.  Junior Alec Berens recorded his second consecutive 76 and stands 49th while Will Roth checks in at 154 after carding a 77.  Senior David Collura shot a 79 on Tuesday.

Cameron Button of Southwestern University carded a five-under par 67 on the Links Course and sets the pace with a 137.  Cheyne Kendall of Schreiner is close behind at 140 while Clay Hinton of Transylvania and Mike Wesko of Methodist are at 141.

Emory continues on in the Championships, making the cut as one of the top 15 finishers after two rounds.  The Eagles will play their final 36 holes on the Raven Course.
