Emory Golf Tied For Fifth After Third Round Of NCAA Championships

Three-Round Results

The No. 9-ranked Emory men's golf team continued its steady climb up the leader board during the third day of competition at the NCAA Division III Championships, and finds itself tied for fifth place as it prepares for Friday's final round.  The 72-hole event is being held at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Florida.

Competing on the 6,854-yard, par-71 Raven Course, Emory checked in with a Thursday score 297,  and now has a  54-hole effort of 896 (303-296-297), tying it with Claremont-Mudd Scripps.  The Eagles' third-round effort tied Transylvania and Wittenberg for the best score of the day among the 15 teams that survived Wednesday's cut.   After three days of play, Transylvania holds the top spot at 876 with UT-Tyler in hot pursuit, just two strokes behind at 878.  Methodist University has a firm grip on third place with a mark of 887 while Illinois Wesleyan is fourth, just three shots better than Emory and CMS, with an 893.

Emory junior Johnathan Chen tied for the team's best score of the round, carding a resilient two-over par 73 that saw him regroup after bogeying four of his first seven holes.  Chen's 54-hole score of seven-over par 218 ties for sixth place out of the 81 players still competing.

Sophomore Alex Wunderlich recorded his second consecutive 73 and is tied for 13th place with a host of other players at seven-over 221.  Senior David Collura delivered his best round of the Championships, coming through with a 75 while junior Will Roth closed out the team's scorers with a five-over par 76.  Junior Alec Berens shot an 80.

Emory will begin teeing off at 8:30 am on Friday in its final round of the 2012-13 season.
