Emory Golf Turns In Program's Best-Ever Performance At NCAAs With Fourth-Place Finish

Final Results

The No. 9-ranked Emory men's golf team closed out a memorable run at the 2013 NCAA Division III Championships on Friday afternoon and came away with a fourth-place finish, the program's best-ever showing at the event.  The 72-hole Championships were held at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Florida.

Competing on the 6,854-yard, par-71 Raven Course, Emory turned in its best score of the four-day tournament, posting a 295 that closed out the team's final total at 1191.   UT-Tyler took home its first-ever national title with an effort of 1167 while Transylvania claimed runner-up honors at 1174.  Methodist University was third, three shots ahead of Emory with an 1188.

Emory junior Johnathan Chen fired an even-par 71 on Friday, finishing with a four-over par 289 (75-70-73-71), good for a third-place tie with Clay Hinton of Transylvania in the 210-player field that originally started the competition back on Tuesday.   Chen's third-place finish enabled him to capture All-America honors.  Sophomore Alex Wunderlich delivered his best effort of the Championships over the final round with a one-under par 70, leaving him at six-over par 291 (75-73-73-70), good for a seventh-place tie on the leader board and All-America acclaim as well.  After going out at two-over par 37, Wunderlich was solid down the stretch, picking up three birdies over the back nine en route to coming in with a three-under 33.  Wunderlich's 70 was the third-best round turned in by the 81 players on Friday.  Rounding out the team's scorers on the day were juniors Alec Berens and Will Roth, both of whom finished with 77s.   Roth recorded a final score of 307 (77-77-76-77) while Berens checked in at 309 (76-76-80-77).  Senior David Collura shot an 81 over the final 18 holes to finish at 322.

NOTES
** Chen's 72-hole score of 289 establishes an Emory individual record at the NCAA Championships, bettering Charles Raindre's previous standard of 291 in 2011.

** Chen's third-place finish is the school's second-best individual performance at the NCAA Championships, second only to Lee Palms' first-place performance in 1991.  It is the seventh time in school history that an Emory player has posted a top-10 finish – Palms (9th, 1990), Palms (1st, 1991), Timothy Hamm (7th, 2004), Mike Lebow (6th, 2006), Charles Raindre (10th, 2011) and Ryan Dagerman (7th, 2012).

** Emory's final team score of 1191 is the program's second-best effort at the NCAA Championships, second only the 2011 squad's showing of 1187.

** Emory's fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships is the best showing ever by the program.   Prior to this season, the 1997 and 2004 teams held that distinction with fifth-place finishes.  It is the seventh top-10 finish for Emory is school history.

** The Eagles' final round performance of 295 ties the program's fourth-best score at the NCAAs.

** Alex Wunderlich's final score of 291 ties Charles Raindre (2011) for the second-best individual mark in school history at the NCAA Championships.

** Alex Wunderlich's 70 on Friday ties the Emory individual record for the low round at the NCAA Championships.  Johnathan Chen accomplished the feat earlier in the week during the  second day of competition, and he becomes the seventh player to finish with that score at nationals.
