Emory Golf Opens Season At Tournament Town Preview

Emory Golf Opens Season At Tournament Town Preview

The No. 7-ranked Emory University golf team opens the fall portion of its 2013-14 schedule this Sunday and Monday (Sept. 22-23) when it competes in the Tournament Town Championship Preview at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.  The 36-hole tournament will be played on the 7,125-yard par-72 East Course.   The 18-team event previews the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships which will be held at the Grandover Resort, May 13-16.

Among the 18 teams that comprise this year's field, 13 are ranked in the Golf World/Nike College Preseason Coaches' Poll including the top four, No. 1 Transylvania, runner-up in last year's national championship, No. 2 Oglethorpe, No. 3 Methodist, the owner of the No. 1 spot in the final 2012-13 Golfstat.com Ratings, and No. 4 St. John's (MN).  Other preseason top-10 squads hitting the course include No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan, No. 7 Emory and No. 10 Gustavus Adolphus.

Head coach John Sjoberg starts his third year at the helm of the program with 10 players back in the fold from last year's team that posted a program-best finish of fourth at the NCAA Championships.  Senior Johnathan Chen (Sugarland, TX) and junior Alex Wunderlich (Ann Arbor, MI) headline the returnees with the pair capturing Third Team All-America acclaim last year. Chen tied for third place at last year's national tournament, the second-best ever performance by an Emory player, while Wunderlich tied for the No. 7 spot.  Wunderlich ended up as the team scoring leader a year ago (75.2 spr) while Chen was right behind him at 75.4 strokes per round.  Seniors Will Roth (Niwot, CO) and Alec Berens (Tucson, AZ) are key veterans who will be relied upon for consistency after the duo combined for 48 out of a possible 50 rounds last season.

Sjoberg welcomes a pair of freshmen to the squad's 12-man roster, Ben Moore (Englewood, CO) and Colby Hipp (Chatsworth, GA).

Playing for Emory in the Tournament Town Preview Championship will be Chen, Wunderlich, Roth, Berens and Hipp.
