Emory Golf To Play At Gordin Classic

The Emory University golf team plays the second of four fall tournaments next Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 30 - Oct. 1) when it competes in the prestigious Gordin Classic. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the par-72 Columbus Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.  The tourney will consist of 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.  Monday's first two rounds will play out over a 6,974-yard course while the final day of action will see the course measure out at 6,804 yards.

Hosted by Ohio Wesleyan, the 12-team field is stocked with some of the premier programs in the Division III ranks.  Five of Division III's top 10 programs are represented in this year's event while a total of 10 squads are slotted among the Top 25.  Among the elite teams taking part will be No. 1-ranked Methodist, last year's No. 3 finisher in the NCAA Championships.  Other 10 top teams hitting the course will include the No. 3 Eagles of head coach John Sjoberg, No. 6 Transylvania, No. 7 Illinois Wesleyan and No. 9 Wittenberg.  Rounding out the ranked teams are No. 13 St. John Fisher, No. 14 Guilford, No. 16 Southwestern and No. 21 Central.  Another Ohio program, Otterbein, will be participating as well.

Emory opened its fall campaign with a 14th-place finish at the Tournament Town Championship Preview held at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, NC.

Senior Will Roth (Niwot, CO) was the team's top performer, shooting a 36-hole score of seven-over par 151 (79-72) that placed him in a tie for 20th place in the 90-player field.
