The Emory men's golf team enjoyed a fine start to the University Athletic Association Championships on Sunday, closing out the day in first place. The 36-hole event is being played at the 6,768-yard, par-72 RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Florida.
The Eagles fired a 294 during the opening round and left the course six shots ahead of the University of Rochester. Carnegie Mellon posted a 302 while New York University rounded out the field with a 308.
Junior Alex Wunderlich shot the best round of the day, carding a one-under 71 that paced the 28-player field. Senior Johnathan Chen and freshman Colby Hipp turned in solid performances with each player finishing at even-par 72. Senior Alec Berens closed out the squad's scorers with a 79 while senior Will Roth checked in with an 80. Freshman Sam Nichamin, competing as an individual, shot a 77.
The final round of the Championships will be held on Monday (Mar. 10).
