Emory Golf Team Opens Spring Season

Emory Golf Team Opens Spring Season

The Emory University golf team will compete in its first tournament of the spring this Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 28-Mar. 1) when it takes part in the Callaway Gardens Collegiate Invitational.  The 36-hole event will be played at the 7,057-yard, par-72 Callaway Gardens Mountain View Course located in Pine Mountain, Georgia.  Serving as the host of the Invitational will be LaGrange College and Berry College.

Emory will be one of 18 teams in the hunt for the title, with this year's field comprised of eight of the top 25-ranked D-III programs including No. 2 and defending Callaway champion Oglethorpe, No. 4 Methodist, No. 9 LaGrange, No. 12 Rhodes, No. 14 Guilford, No. 15 Centre, No. 19 Berry and No. 23 Washington and Lee.  Last year, Emory turned in a fourth-place showing out of 16 teams.

During the fall portion of the season, senior Alex Wunderlich paced the team with a 75.8 strokes-per-round average, playing in three of the team's four events.  Junior Sam Nichamin was second on that list at 76.0 strokes per round.

Following the Callaway Gardens Invitational, Emory will prepare for the University Athletic Association Championships, Mar. 8-9, at the Redtail Golf Club in Sorrento, Florida.
