2019-20 Emory Men's Golf Recap

2019-20 Emory Men's Golf Recap

Despite seeing the 2019-20 season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Emory men's golf came through with a number of outstanding team and individual accomplishments.

After an outstanding fall season, the men’s golf team launched its spring schedule with a third-place finish out of 18 teams at the Savannah Invitational, carding a 54-hole score of 19-under 845, the program’s second-best ever score for a three-round tourney.  Coming off that standout performance, the Eagles were then set to defend their UAA title in Palm Coast, Florida, before being called home for the year when Emory athletics cancelled the remainder of the spring intercollegiate spring season on March 12, 2020.

For the record, the Eagles registered top-five finishes in all five of their tournaments including first-place honors during the fall at the DIII Fall Preview (18-team field) and the O’Briant-Jensen Memorial (22-team field).  Emory established a school season scoring record averaging 288.8 strokes over 14 rounds of competition, with individual players logging a total of 33 rounds of par or better.

Four players were lauded with PING All-America recognition with sophomores Max Schwarz and Logan Ryan tabbed for second-team acclaim. Schwarz blossomed in his second campaign, placing second on the team in scoring average (71.9 spg) and producing eight rounds of par or better.   Ryan claimed medalist honors at the O’Briant-Jensen Memorial with a brilliant five-score of five-uder 137, that tied the school record for a 36-hole tournament.  His second-round mark of 65 established a school record, bettering the mark of 66 held by five different players. Ryan averaged 72.4 strokes over his 14 rounds.

Senior Matt Organisak averaged a squad-best 71.8 strokes, tying for the team lead with eight rounds of par or better en route to bringing home PING Third Team All-America honors. The Sudbury, Mass., native recorded a pair of top-10 overall finishes including a tie for fifth place out of 75 players at the Gordin Collegiate Classic.  The four-time all-region honoree holds down the No. 2 position on the program’s all-time scoring ladder with a mark of 73.04 strokes over 86 rounds.  Organisak wrapped up his career as the program's only four-time All-American (first, second or third team honors).

Junior Eric Yiu rounded out the quartet of All-Americans with a berth on the Honorable Mention Team. The owner of a 72.1 strokes-per-round average, Yiu tied senior Sam Galloway as the team’s top scorer at the Savannah Invitational with a six-under score of 210, tying the program’s fifth-best mark.  Galloway bid farewell to Emory in the No. 6 position in career scoring average (74.56 spr).

Organisak, Schwarz and Ryan were picked to the All-University Athletic Association Team.

Emory ended the year ranked No. 3 in the final Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll.

Joining Organisak as seniors were Sam GallowayVraj Patel and Leo Rich. Galloway finished in the No. 6 position on the program's all-time scoring average ladder with a showing of  74.56 strokes over 65 rounds of competition.
