Men’s Golf Tied for 11th After First Round of NCAA Fall National Preview

The No. 2 Emory men's golf team teed off in the NCAA Fall National Preview on Sunday in Boulder City, Nevada. The Eagles completed the first of three rounds at Boulder Creek Golf Club, a Par 72 7,345-yard course just outside of Las Vegas. After shooting a 313 (+25) in the first round of the competition, the Eagles find themselves tied for 11th place on the leaderboard and 16 strokes off the leader heading into Monday.

As a team, the Eagles faired well on Par 3s, having the fifth best average score on such holes. However, the Par 4s proved to be challenging as they averaged 4.70 strokes on those holes. They tapped in 11 birdies and 46 pars on the day as well.

Junior Tony Li had the best score of any Eagle on the day, shooting a 77 (+5). Li had a rocky front nine, where he shot four over par with three bogeys, a double bogey, and picked up a birdy to limit the damage. However, he was just one stroke over par on the back nine, picking up another birdy, two bogeys, and six pars. Li finds himself tied for 22nd place and seven strokes off the leader heading into day two tomorrow.

Junior Josh Qian turned in a solid scorecard as well, shooting a 78 (+6). Qian found himself in some trouble on Par 4s, shooting five over par on those holes. However, he limited the damage as he was able to shoot two under on Par 5s. Qian enters day two of the competition tied for 33rd place and eight strokes off the leader.

Senior Jackson Klutznick and junior Michael Burry find themselves tied for 43rd after shooting a 79 (+7) on day one. Klutznick strung together four birdies over the course of the day but found himself in a bit of trouble on a couple of holes. Klutznick double-bogeyed the fifth hole, a 535-yard Par 5, and triple-bogeyed the 14th hole, a 420-yard Par 4.

Burry also had a solid overall day but a tough pair of holes drove up his score. The junior racked up 10 pars and two birdies, but double-bogeyed hole 15, a 375-yard Par 4, and triple bogeyed the 18th and final hole of the day, a 470-yard Par 4. Heading into day two, Klutznick and Burry find themselves nine strokes off the leader.

Finishing off the scores for the Eagles was freshman Kevin Mu, shooting an 84 (+12). Mu picked up 12 pars on the day, but like his teammates, fell victim to a couple of difficult holes that drove up his score. Mu is tied for 80th place and 14 strokes off the lead.

The Eagles will be back in action at Boulder Creek Golf Club tomorrow, with Qian starting things off at 9:40 AM (PT).
