A basket by Case Western's Reid Anderson with 10 seconds left snapped a  63-63 tie and gave the Spartans win over Emory Sunday afternoon.  Emory saw its overall record slip to 14-8, 6-5 in the University Athletic Association following a 65-63 setback to the Spartans who upped their overall slate to 13-9, 5-6 in the league.

The loss negated a strong effort by Emory senior Chad Hixon who totaled a season-high 17 points, his ninth double-figure scoring performance of the season.  Junior Julien Williams, coming off a career high 21-point performance on Friday night at Carnegie Mellon, chipped in 11 points.

Case ended the game shooting 52 percent from the floor (24-of-46) compared to the Eagles' mark of 35 percent (25-of-71).  The Spartans posted a slim 39-38 edge on the glass, but Emory pounded the offensive boards hard, totaling 21 caroms on the end of the floor that played a role in its decided advantage in field goal attempts.

Emory trailed by a 43-35 count at halftime as the host Case team shot a blistering 68.0 percent from the floor (17-of-25) while the Eagles hit 37.8 percent (14-of-37).  The Eagles opened the second half on a 15-6 scoring run and took a 50-49 lead with 13:57 remaining in the game following a three-point field goal by freshman Alex Greven.  Emory spread the scoring around in that spurt with five different players scoring points including four apiece by Hixon and classmate Anthony Fernandez.  Greven's trey started a nip-and-tuck affair the remainder of the game that saw eight lead changes and four ties.

Emory trailed by one point before a bucket by freshman Michael Friedberg pushed the Eagles ahead by a 62-61 margin with 5:18 left on the clock.  The score would remain that way until a pair of charity tosses by Bryan Erce with 1:09 remaining gave the Spartans a one-point advantage, 63-62.  A free throw by Hixon knotted the contest, setting the stage for Anderson's deciding basket.  The Eagles had an opportunity to tie things up, but missed its opportunity with the buzzer sounding as the rebound went out of bounds.

Emory will return to action next Friday (Feb. 19) when it hosts New York University.

Notes - Austin Claunch doled out eight assists in the Case game, running his season total to 134, good for second place on Emory's season list.  Claunch is two shy of tying the No. 1 mark of 136 held by Paul Damm set during the 1989-90 season ... Alex Gulotta knocked down three three-point field goals against the Spartans and now has treys to his credit in the last nine straight games ... In addition to his 17 points, Hixon paced the team in rebounding for sixth time in the past seven games with eight boards ... Emory set a school game record for fewest turnovers with just two miscues in the Case contest.
