Emory Men’s Basketball Sweeps the Weekend with a 98-89 Win over Case

Emory University's Anthony Fernandez led all scorers with a season-high 23 points, guiding the Eagles to a 98-89 win over Case Western Reserve University and a perfect weekend at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

Emory improved to 9-4 on the season with the team's fifth win in its last six contests, while Case dropped to 8-5 on the campaign, including a 0-2 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) contests.  Emory improved to 2-1 in conference play with a pair of victories this weekend.

Emory got off to an early start, grabbing a nine-point lead (21-12) with 11:13 left in the first half.  However, the Spartans would battle back to take a two point lead, their largest of the contest, with 3:28 left in the first.  Trailing by one with under a minute left in the frame, Emory junior Julien Williams knocked down a layup to give the Eagles a 40-39 lead heading into the locker room.  Emory would not trail for the remainder of the game.

The Eagles would build on their lead early in the second half, with sophomore Austin Claunch knocking down a three and Chad Hixon converting a three-point play to put Emory up by seven one minute into the period.

After another Case run led to a 68-68 tie with 10:19 remaining in the contest, Emory went on an 8-0 run over the next five minutes of play to take the lead for good.  Fernandez would secure the game with seven-straight points over a one-minute stretch to give Emory an 11-point lead with 3:37 remaining.

The Eagles' were able to lock down the victory with solid free throw shooting down the stretch, converting 24 of 26 free throws in the second half, including 15 of 16 in the final three minutes.

Fernandez finished the game shooting eight of ten from the field, including three of four from beyond the three point arc, and his 23 points are the second-most by an Eagle this season.  He also finished tied with Chad Hixon for the team lead with five rebounds. 

Case Western's Reid Anderson and Bryan Erce lead the squad with 22 points apiece, while Eric Duerr chipped in 21 for the Spartans.

Emory will return to action on Wednesday, January 13th, as the Eagles will travel to Piedmont College for a 7:00 PM non-conference matchup.

Game Notes
Emory's 98 points marks the team's second-highest scoring total of the season, and the fifth-time this year that the Eagles have scored over 90 points in a game... Emory shot 90.6% from the charity stripe, converting a season-high 29 free throws... The Eagles forced the Spartans to commit 17 turnovers during the game, and outscored Case 25-9 off turnovers... Emory's bench contributed 44 points during the game, while holding the Spatans' reserves to 22 points... Five Eagles (Fernandez, Daniel Curtin, Claunch, Hixon and Michael Friedberg) finished the game with over 10 points... Claunch led all Emory players with seven assists and three steals in the game.
