Freshman Alex Greven totaled a season-high19 points to lead
three Emory double-figure scorers and sparking the Emory men's
basketball team to a 66-54 win over Drew University in its opening
game at the Washington & Lee Tournament. With the
victory, the Eagles of head coach Jason Zimmerman captured their
third straight game and raised their overall record to 7-3 while
the Rangers slipped to 2-6 with the setback.
Emory ended the game shooting 51.2 percent (21-of-41) from the
floor compared to Drew's 33.9 percent (20-of-59). While the Rangers
outrebounded Emory by a 37-26 margin, the Eagles knocked down
19-of-25 from the charity stripe vs. Drew's seven-of-13.
After hitting just four of its first 13 field goal attempts, Emory
connected on eight of its last nine and closed out the first half
on a 14-0 scoring run to claim a 32-19 advantage at halftime.
Greven came off the bench to score 14 points during the opening 20
minutes of action, sinking five-of-seven from the floor and
all three of his free throw opportunities, while senior Anthony
Fernandez gave the squad a boost as a reserve, scoring six of his
11points. The Eagles concluded the opening stanza shooting
54.5 percent (12-of-22) from the floor while the Rangers sputtered
to a 25.8 percent effort (8-of-31).
Five points from senior Daniel Curtin helped key a 7-2 opening to
the second half that gave Emory a 39-21 margin with 17:24 left. A
three-pointer by Fernandez with 10:40 on the clock made the score
48-33 in the Eagles' favor, however the Rangers chipped away at the
deficit and drew to within eight points, 50-42, with 7:16
remaining. Emory responded with the game's next six points to
increase its cushion back to double digits, 56-42, with 4:40 left
and basically ending Drew's comeback bid.
Emory advances to the champion game of the tournament Sunday
afternoon where it will meet host Washington & Lee in a 4:00
p.m. start. The Generals topped Swarthmore, 58-49, in the
first game of the day.
NOTES - Emory is 6-1 this season when leading at
the half ...Daniel Curtin has three-point field goals to his credit
in his last seven contests ... Greven's 19 points was his seventh
game of double-figure scoring this year ... Emory has shot 50
percent or better from the floor in its last three and in a total
of five contests this season ... Senior Chad Hixon paced the team
in rebounding with six boards, the fourth time this season he has
topped the club in that category ... Drew's 33.9 percent mark from
the floor was an opponent low vs. Emory this year ... Fernandez has
scored in double figures in four of his last five games ... Drew's
54 points was the third-lowest opponent total against a
Zimmerman-coached Emory team.
