Freshman Alex Greven totaled a season-high 21 points but it wasn't enough as the Emory men's basketball came out on the short end of a 76-65 decision to Washington & Lee in the championship game of the W&L Tournament.  The loss snapped a three-game Eagles' winning streak and dropped their record to 7-4 while the Generals raised their ledger to 8-2.

Emory and Washington and Lee shot nearly the same from the floor in the contest with the Eagles checking in a 43.4 percent (23-of-53) and the Generals finishing with a 43.3 percent effort (26-of-60).  Washington and Lee held a decided advantage in three-point shooting, hitting 50 percent from beyond the arc (11-of-22) compared to Emory's 33.3 percent (6-of-18).  The Generals also enjoyed a 39-26 bulge in rebounding, including a 17-6 advantage on the offensive glass that helped them to a 13-4 margin in second-chance points.

The key stretch in the second half came over a 2:45 span when a 9-2 Generals' spurt increased a four-point lead to a 61-50 cushion with 4:14 left.  Zac White scored five of his 14 points in that run while a three-pointer by Jeremy Adkins capped things off.  Leading the home team in scoring was Jason Cimino with 17 points, sinking five-of-six from the floor including all four of his three-point field goal tries.

Greven, Emory's lone representative on the all-tournament team, ended the afternoon converting five-of-nine from the field, including three-of-five from distance, and all eight free throw attempts.  Senior Chad Hixon added nine points along with a team-high six rebounds, while junior Julien Williams also chipped in nine points.

The first half was a tale of two games with the Generals using a 17-2 run over a five-minute stretch, keyed by a pair of three-point field goals by Cimino to take a 27-15 lead with 7:21 left in the stanza.  Emory responded immediately with a 17-2 flurry that enabled it to hold a 32-29 edge with 1:23 left on the clock.  Greven totaled seven of his 12 first-half points in the run while senior Anthony Fernandez and sophomore Eric Panicco added four points apiece.  The Generals came back to score the contest's next four points, the final three coming on another trey by Cimino, to take a 33-32 margin into the locker room at halftime.  Both teams shot 48.0 percent from the floor in the opening stanza, sinking 12-of-25 of their field goal attempts.

Emory returns to action on Friday, Jan. 8, when it hosts Carnegie Mellon in an 8:00 p.m. tip.
