Junior Austin Claunch turned in back-to-back
doubles of points and assists in helping the Eagles to a pair of
victories that enabled them to remain in a tie for first place in
the UAA. In the victories over Case Western and Carnegie
Mellon, the 5-foot-9 Claunch shot 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the
floor, including 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from three-point range, and
averaged team highs in points (21.0 ppg), assists (10.5 apg),
steals (3.5 spg) and minutes (35.5 mpg) in helping Emory boost its
overall record to 13-3, 4-1 in the conference. In a 97-73
decision over Case Western on Friday, Claunch totaled 17 points,
second high on the club, and doled out 11 assists with no turnovers
in 31 minutes of play. His assists total tied the
second-highest individual game mark in school history and he ended
the evening, shooting five-of-11 from the floor, including
three-of-six from beyond the arc. He closed out the weekend
tossing in a team-high 25 points, tying his second-highest career
total, in an 88-71 verdict over Carnegie Mellon, hitting eight of
his 12 field goal attempts including two-of-three three
pointers. He dished out 10 assists and topped all players
with four steals. His 21 assists enabled him to move into No.
4 spot on the school’s all-time list with 329
assists.
So far this year, he has recorded 13 double-figure scoring contests
and has led or tied for the team high in assists in all 16
games.
