Claunch, Davis & Greven Highlight Five Emory Selections To All-UAA Men's Basketball Team

Five members of the 2010-11 Emory University men's basketball squad have been selected to the All-University Athletic Association Team.  The all-league honorees were chosen by the conference coaches.

Junior Austin Claunch (Cypress, TX) headlines the group with his second consecutive first-team selection while sophomore Alex Greven (Winston-Salem, NC) and freshman Jake Davis (Cincinnati, OH) were voted to the second team.  Davis was also named as the league's Rookie of the Year.  Rounding out the Emory representatives on this year's all-league squad were senior Julien Williams (Potomac, MD) and junior Alex Gulotta (Briarcliff Manor, NY), both of whom garnered honorable mention berths.

The 5-foot-9 Claunch directed the high-powered Emory offense that scored a league-leading 83.6 points per game (15th nationally) from his point-guard position, averaging a UAA-best 7.4 assists per contest that also ranked No. 3 nationally among Division III players.  One of the top all-around performers in the nation, Claunch finished among the top 10 UAA players in six different statistical categories and was first in four.  In addition to his assists average, he topped the loop in steals (1.9 apg), free throw percentage  (.875, 105-of-120) and minutes (36.4 mpg).   He paced the team and ranked fourth in the UAA in scoring with 16.5 per-game average and either led or shared for team scoring honors on nine occasions.  Named the UAA Player of the Week on three occasions, he was selected to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week twice.  In league action, Claunch upped his scoring average to 18.2 points, good for fourth place on the UAA list, while doling out a conference –best 7.8 assists per outing.  Claunch established a school seasonal record in assists for the second straight year with his 186 dimes in 2010-11 bettering his previous standard of 151 set during the 2009-10 campaign.  Claunch becomes the first Emory player since Chase Fawsett (2003-05) and the third overall to earn back-to-back seasons of First Team All-UAA acclaim.

The 6-foot-5 Davis enjoyed a banner rookie year with his 13.3 per-game scoring average placing him third on the team, 10th on the UAA chart and tops among all league freshmen.  Coming primarily off the bench, he scored in double figures in 18 games and produced three outings of 20-plus points including a season-high 22-point night at Case Western (Feb. 18).  In addition to leading all UAA frosh in scoring, he set the standard for all rookies in both rebounding (6.5 rpg) and free throw percentage (.830, 83-of-100).  He was the Eagles' top scorer and rebounder in nine contests and registered three double-doubles including an 18-point, season-high 14-rebound effort against Rochester (Jan. 8).  His 47.8 percent mark (119-of-249) from the floor was 11th in the UAA and second among freshmen.  Davis ended the year with 332 points, the third-highest total by an Eagle freshman.  His selection as UAA Rookie of The Year marks the first time that an Emory player has been  tabbed for the honor since its inception in 2000-01.

Greven, one of three players to start all 25 games, ended the year second on the team in scoring with a 14.5 per-game average, good for the eighth spot on the UAA list.  Third on the team in minutes (29.8 mpg), he totaled 20 double-figure scoring games and chalked up the top-two scoring performances by an Eagle during the year – 31 points against Methodist (Dec. 4), that helped him earn UAA Player of the Week honors, and 28 points vs. Oglethorpe (Nov. 17).   He either led or shared for team scoring honors in five affairs including back-to-back efforts of 18 points in UAA encounters against Chicago (Jan. 16) and Case Western (Jan. 21).  One of the team's tops marksmen from the foul line, he converted 83.3 percent (90-of-108) of his attempts from the stripe, good for fourth place among conference players.

Williams, a starter in all 25 games, used a strong showing in UAA play en route to claiming  his honorable spot on the all-league team.  After scoring in single digits in his first 14 games, the 6-foot-2 Williams posted double-figure scoring in nine of his last 11 games in finishing with an overall scoring average of 8.2 points per game.  His offensive numbers were considerably higher in conference action with his 11.0 per-game scoring average good for third on the team and 15th in the UAA.  Williams shot a keen 57.4 percent (54-of-94) from the field over the course of 14 UAA outings that placed him first on the team and fourth on the league ladder.

The sharp-shooting Gulotta kept opponents off balance with his long-range bombs that saw him sink 71 three-point field goals, the third-highest mark in school history.  His league-leading mark of 2.8 triples per game ranked 38th nationally and his 45.8 percent (71-of-155) showing from beyond the arc was fourth in the league and 10th nationally.   The 6-foot-1 Gulotta, who finished second on the club behind Claunch in minutes (30.4 mpg), compiled 14 games of double-figure scoring including four of 20 or more points.  He blitzed Guilford College (Nov. 20) with a career-high 26 points and drained a school-record tying eight three-point field goals in that contest,  one of his 16 performances multiple treys.  He saw a 35-game streak, tying for the second-longest mark in school history, of three-point field goals come to an end against Carnegie Mellon (Feb. 20) in the second-to-last game of the season.

Emory ended the year with an overall record of 20-5, marking the second-highest win total in school history.  In league play, the Eagles finished second (the program's best showing since 1990) with an 11-3 ledger with the conference victory total the second highest in program annals.
