Emory University junior Austin Claunch (Cypress,
TX), a driving force on the 2010-11 Eagles’ basketball team,
has been recognized for his stellar play this season, earning
all-region honors as selected by a pair of different
organizations.
The 5-foot-9 point guard landed a spot on D3hoops.com All-South
Region First Team and a berth on the National Basketball Coaches
Association All-South Region Second Team. He becomes just the
second Emory player to earn recognition on the D3hoops.com
All-Region Team and first to have been afforded first-team
kudos. He joins Tim Garrett (1987, 1988, 1989, 1990) and
Spiros Ferderigos (2008) as Eagles who have been recognized by the
NABC for all-region acclaim.
Claunch helped Emory to an overall record of 20-5, the
second-highest win total in school history, by ranking among the
University Athletic Association’s top 10 performers in six
statistical categories. He topped the squad and the UAA, and
ranked third nationally in assists with a school seasonal mark of
7.4 per outing. In addition to his assists average, he led
the conference in steals (1.9 spg), free throw percentage (.875,
105-of-120) and minutes (36.4 mpg). The team’s leading
scorer on nine occasions, he posted double-figure scoring on 22
occasions and
his team-high 16.5 per-game scoring average paced the squad and
ranked fifth on the league ladder. He was named the UAA Player of
the Week three times and earned a spot on the D3hoops.com Team of
the Week twice.
