Emory University junior Austin Claunch
(Cypress, TX) has been selected by the University Athletic
Association as Basketball Co-Player of the Week after helping the
Eagles to a win over No. 14-ranked Rochester. He shares the award
with D.J. Glavan of New York University. It marks the third
time this season and fourth in his career that he has been selected
for the honor.
In what proved to be the team’s final game of the campaign
after not being selected for an at-large berth to the NCAA D-III
Tournament, the 5-foot-9 Claunch keyed the 83-72 win over the
Yellowjackets that boosted the team’s record to 20-5, the
first 20-win campaign for the Eagles since 1989-90. Claunch
totaled a team-high 24 points, dished out nine assists, grabbed
nine rebounds and contributed four steals in the contest that
helped Emory finish the UAA portion of the schedule with an 11-3
mark, the second-highest league win total in school history.
Claunch sank nine-of-13 from the floor, including both
three-point field goal attempts, and went four-of-four from the
charity stripe as he recorded his 22nd double-figure
scoring game of the campaign and sixth of 20 or more
points.
His steals total marked his 13th outing of two or more
thefts and his nine assists upped his total to 186, tops on the
school’s yearly ladder. He established a school seasonal
record in assists per game (7.4 apg).
Claunch finished the regular season ranked among the top 10
performers in the UAA in six statistical categories and was first
in assists (7.4 apg), free throw percentage (.875), steals (1.9
spg) and minutes (36.3 mpg).
