Emory's Alex Gulotta and Alex Greven Named First Team Academic All-District

Emory's Alex Gulotta and Alex Greven Named First Team Academic All-District

Emory University junior Alex Gulotta (Briarcliff Manor, NY) and sophomore Alex Greven (Winston-Salem, NC), two key members of the men’s basketball squad, have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team.  The pair were District 3 selections from the College Division which consists of institutions from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

The honor is awarded annually to student athletes who have excelled both academically and athletically.  To be eligible, a nominee must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at his/her current institution, carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) and be a starter or key reserve.

The 6-foot-1 Gulotta majors in business and maintains a 3.85 grade-point average.  He has started 17 of the Eagles’ 18 contests and is averaging 29.8 minutes and 12.4 points per game with his scoring average placing him 12th among University Athletic Association players. His long-range shooting skills have seen him knock down 3.2 three-point field goals per game, tops in the league and 20th nationally in Division III, while his 48.3 percent mark from beyond the arc stands fourth in the conference and 11th on the national scene.  He has scored in double figures on 10 occasions including a career-high 26 point performance vs. Guilford (Nov. 20), a game where he tied the school’s single-game record with eight three-point field goals.

The 6-foot-3 Greven majors in neuroscience and behavioral biology and posts a 3.76 grade-point average.  A starter in all of the team’s first 18 games, he is tossing in 15.1 points per outing, good for second place on the club and sixth in the UAA.  A double-figure scorer in 14 games, he has produced four efforts of 20 or more points including a career-high 31 points against Methodist (Dec. 4) that ranks as the high-water mark by an Emory player this season.  Greven also ranks among the league’s top free throw shooters with his 83.3 percent performance from the stripe good for the No. 5 position.

By virtue of their first-team selections, both Gulotta and Greven will be placed on the national ballot for the Captial One Academic All-America Team that will be announced on Feb. 22.

Voting for the Academic All-District team is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America.  District 3 is composed of NCAA institutions in the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
