Emory's Alex Greven Named To Capital One Men's Basketball Academic All-America Team

Emory University men's basketball player Alex Greven (Winston-Salem, NC) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Greven captured a third-team berth in recognition for his achievements both on the court and in the classroom during the 2012-13 season.

Greven, a senior, has started all 23 of the Eagles' contests this year and ranks second on the squad and third among University Athletic Association players in scoring with a 16.9 per-game average.   A double-figure scorer in 21 games, he has produced eight performances of 20 or more points.  He has either led or shared for team scoring honors on seven occasions this year including a back-to-back efforts of 26 points this past weekend in games against Case Western and Carnegie Mellon.  He has knocked down a team-high 60 three-point field goals and his mark of 2.6 triples per game ranks second in the league.  Career-wise, the four-year veteran has totaled 1,212 points, the sixth-highest mark in school history, and his 155 three-point field goals place him in the No. 7 spot on the school's all-time list.

Academically, Greven majors in neuroscience and behavioral biology and owns a grade-point average of 3.78.  Earlier this month, he was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team for the second straight year.

Greven becomes Emory's 136th Academic All-American and the fourth men's basketball player to earn that distinction, joining Kevin Felner (1992-93), Neil Bhutta (1999-2000), and Chase Fawsett (2004-05) in that select company.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution, and be selected to an Academic All-District team.

Emory, 17-6 on the year, hosts Covenant College in a non-league tilt on Tuesday (Feb. 19) before returning to UAA action on Saturday when it welcomes the University of Rochester to the Woodruff PE Center in a 4:00 pm tip.
