Junior Adam Gigax recorded his first career double-double and classmate Whit Rapp set a school assists record in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a Sunday afternoon win over New York University.  The Eagles won their fifth straight contest and raised their overall record to 14-4, 5-2 in the University Athletic Association, following an 84-75 decision over the Violets who fell to 6-11 in overall play, 1-6 in the league.

Gigax led all players with 27 points, ending the day sinking 10-of-21 field goal attempts, including five treys in 10 tries, and both of his free throw attempts.  It represented his eighth consecutive and 16^th double-figure scoring effort of the year. He also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds in posting the double-double.  Rapp established the Eagles' single-game record with 16 assists, his seventh double-figure effort of the season, topping the previous standard of 14 held by Michael Florin (vs. NYU, Feb. 2-15).  Senior Jim Gordon contributed 18 points, converting seven-of-17 field goals including a career-high tying four three pointers. Gordon also grabbed seven rebounds.

Five straight points by Emory, started with a three pointer by Gigax and followed by a bucket by Gordon, gave the Eagles an eight-point lead, 55-47, early in the second half.  However, the Violets responded with an 8-0 run to knot the score at 57-57 with 13:49 remaining.  A  jumper by freshman Nick Tupanjanin pushed the Eagles to a 63-60 lead, but back-to-back baskets gave NYU a 64-63 advantage.  After the teams traded scores, a layup by junior Chris Avant gave Emory back the lead for good at 67-66 with 6:13 left. A pair of free throws by NYU's Joe Timmes cut the Eagle margin to one point, but Emory tallied eight straight points over a two-minute stretch, with Gordon and Gigax hitting treys in that run, to claim a 77-68 cushion with 2:02 left.  A Violet trey cut their deficit to six, but a Gigax triple raised Emory back to an 80-71 margin with 1:17 remaining.

Emory ended the contest successful on 44.1 percent (30 of 68) of its field goal attempts compared the NYU's 41.5 percent (27 of 65).  The Eagles drained 12 of 31 from beyond the arc, their fourth straight and 11^th double-figure effort of the season, while the Violets were nine of 24. Emory finished with a 43-38 lead on the glass.

In a sharp contrast to Friday evening's vs. Brandeis that saw a total of 26 first-half fouls called, Emory and NYU waged an entertaining opening 20 minutes of play, with the Eagles taking a 42-39 edge into halftime.  Gigax topped the Emory scoring effort with 14 points while Gordon added nine on the strength of three-of-six three-point shooting.  Emory used a 9-2 spurt over a two minute and thirty-second stretch, capped by a triple by Gordon, to take a 29-19 lead with 8:47 remaining.  A bucket by the Violets' Ross Udine cut the Emory advantage to six points, but the Eagles responded by tallying six of the game's next seven points, finished off by a pair of charity tosses by Gigax, to take their largest lead of the stanza, 42-31, with 2:52 on the clock.  However, those would be the final points that Emory would score as NYU rattled off an 8-0 blitz to close out the half, sparked by three pointers by Jordan Harris and Jimmy Martinelli.  The Eagles connected on 45.7 percent (16 of 35) from the floor, including 46.2 percent (6 of 13) from beyond the arc, while NYU shot 45.5 percent (15 of 33) from the field.

Emory returns to action on Friday (Feb. 3) when it plays at Brandeis.
