Junior Adam Gigax tied his career high with 36 points and the Emory men's basketball team used a torrid offensive effort in earning a key Sunday afternoon road win over the University of Chicago.  The Eagles snapped a three-game losing streak and raised their overall record to 15-7, 6-5 in the University Athletic Association following a 99-88 decision over the Maroons who fell to 13-9 in overall play, 5-6 in the league.

Gigax ended the afternoon converting a career-best 13 field goals in 18 opportunities, including five treys in seven attempts, along with all five free throw opportunities in registering his 18^th double-figure scoring performance of the year and third of 30 or more points.  Senior Jim Gordon added 15 points, sinking seven-of-12 from the floor, while sophomore Geberal Baitey posted a career-high 14 points off the bench, going five-of-eight from the floor and three-of-three from the stripe.  Junior Whit Rapp finished with his third straight game of 11 assists, boosting his school-season record total to 200.

The Eagles shot a blazing season-high mark of 61.7 percent (37 of 60) from the field, with that effort ranking as the sixth-highest game effort in program history.  Emory was successful on a season-best 56.3 percent (9 of 16) from three-point range and drained 88.9 percent (16 of 18) from the foul line.  The 99 points represented the eighth time this season Emory had cracked the 90-point plateau, four of which have come in league contests.  Chicago checked in with a 42.4 percent (28 of 66) mark from the field, including 32 percent (8 of 25) from distance. The Maroons converted 63.2 percent (24 of 38) from the foul line.

Holding a 55-51 edge with 16:15 left in the game, Emory went on a key 11-2 spurt, started by a Gigax jumper, to claim a 66-53 advantage with 13:39 on the clock.  A key three pointer by Baitey with 12:41 on the clock kept Emory ahead by a 69-58 count, but the Maroons would cut their deficit to six points following a 9-4 run.  Back-to-back baskets by Blaine Crawford cut a 10-point Emory lead to six with 5:27 left, but the Eagles responded with a 9-3 blitz, with Gigax scoring seven points in that stretch, boosting them to an 89-77 cushion with 3:17 remaining.  A triple by UC's Jake Fenlon drew it to within eight points, but a bucket by Gordon pushed Emory back to a 10-point lead with 1:32 left.  Emory shot 69.2 percent (18 of 26) from the floor over the final 20 minutes of action.

Emory took a 45-43 lead into halftime, connecting on 55.9 percent (19 of 34) from the floor compared to UC's 33.3 percent (12 of 36). Chicago was able to keep pace with the Eagles via the charity stripe, hitting 15 of 19 tries while the Eagles were three of four.  Emory trailed by a 30-22 margin with 8:42 left in the stanza before Gigax tallied 13 straight points, igniting a 19-5 blitz that put Emory ahead by a 41-35 count with 3:28 on the clock.  Emory maintained a six-point advantage at 45-39 following a jumper by Gigax with 1:08 left, before Chicago scored the final four points of the half. Gigax torched the Maroons for 20 first-half points, converting eight-of-12 field goal attempts, including four triples in five opportunities.  Baitey gave Emory a big boost off the bench, picking up nine points.  Waller Perez and Jake Fenlon each totaled 11 points for Chicago.   Perez would ended as the Maroons' top scorer for the day with 22 points.

Emory returns to action next Friday (Feb. 17) when it welcomes Case Western Reserve to the Woodruff PE Center in the first of a three-game home stand.
