No. 2 Emory Men's Basketball Wins At Home vs. Piedmont

Junior Romin Williams registered a game-high 26 points to lead three double-figure scorers, and the Emory men's basketball team continued its torrid offensive pace on Saturday afternoon in earning a win at home over Piedmont College.  The No. 2-ranked Eagles raised their overall record to 9-0 following a 96-71 triumph over the Lions who fell to 5-2.

Williams ended the contest by connecting on six three-point field goals in 16 attempts while going eight-eight from the charity stripe in dialing up his fifth outing of 20 or more points this season. The junior tandem of Matt Davet and Matthew Schner added punch to the attack by combining for 32 points with Davet producing 18 on seven-of-13 field goal shooting, including a pair treys, and Schner totaling 14, converting four-of-seven from beyond the arc and a pair of makes from the foul line.  Junior point guard Nick Stuck dished out 10 assists, his second career double-figure outing in that category.

Williams scored 17 points over the final 20 minutes of action, helping Emory to a 56-42 scoring advantage.  Holding a 57-49 advantage with 12:37 remaining in the game, the Eagles exploded for a 17-2 run in just a 2:25 span, with Williams accounting for eight points during that stretch on the strength of two triples and two free throws, to take a stranglehold on the game at 74-51 with 9:02 on the clock.  Another make from distance by Williams allowed Emory to take a 30-point bulge, 86-56, with 5:30 remaining, while a three-pointer by Schner with 4:27 on the clock pushed the Eagles to their largest lead of the contest, 89-58.  All 14 Emory players got into the game with 10 scoring and 11 getting into the rebounding column.

During the opening half, Emory maintained a four-point lead before an 11-4 spurt over a three-minute stretch, sparked by five points from Williams, extended its edge to 37-26 with 3:11 left.  The Eagles eventually took a 40-29 margin into halftime with Davet picking up 11 points.

For the game, Emory hit 45.8 percent (33-of-72) of its field goal attempts and rained down 15 treys in 38 attempts for an effort of 39.5 percent.  It marked the sixth time this year that the Eagles had finished with 10 or more triples.  Emory outboarded the Lions, 43-35, with junior Lawrence Rowley topping all players with eight caroms.

The 9-0 mark represents just the second time in program history that an Emory team has won its opening nine games.  The 2011-12 unit started that year with a 12-0 ledger.

The Eagles return to action on Dec. 29 when they host defending D-III national champion and 13th-ranked UW-Oshkosh at 4:00 pm on the first day of action of the Emory Holiday Classic.
