Men's Basketball Bounces Back with 83-68 Win Over Chicago

The No. 25 ranked Emory University men's basketball team bounced back Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Chicago 83-68 to close out the first UAA home weekend.

Four Emory starters reached double figures in the scoring column as the Eagles improved to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the UAA. Senior Matthew Schner led both teams with 22 points. For the Maroons, Alec Bryan and Jackson Piotrowski had 11 points as Chicago dipped to 5-8 and 0-2 in the conference.

Schner went 10-for-20 from the floor as he topped Emory in scoring for the fifth straight game. Freshman Logan Shanahan was 5-for-7 including 3-for-5 from behind the arc as he poured in 16 points while adding team-highs in both rebounds (7) and blocks (3). Fellow freshman Cale Martens finished with 11 points and senior Nick Stuck had 10 points and dished out a game-high seven assists.

The Maroons opened the contest 4-for-7 from distance across the first 10 minutes of action, helping the visitors build a five-point advantage at 19-14. However, the Eagles countered with a 15-2 run across a three-minute span to gain a 29-21 edge, a lead they did not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Emory went into the halftime break in front by 12 at 39-27 and quickly grew its lead as the second half got underway, forcing Chicago to turn the ball over on its first three possessions. Shanahan capitalized on all three turnovers, cashing in on the other end for seven quick points to push the Eagles ahead 46-27. The lead grew to as many as 23 with 11:59 to go before settling into the 15-point final margin.

The UAA slate continues next weekend for Emory as the Eagles face their first double weekend on the road at Case Western Reserve and Carnegie Mellon.
