Men's Basketball Torch Nets in Road Win at #24 Case Western Reserve

Men's Basketball Torch Nets in Road Win at #24 Case Western Reserve

The Emory University men's basketball team was on fire from the floor Friday evening, leading to an 80-70 road victory over No. 24 ranked Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH.

The Eagles shot a season-best 60.8% (31-for-51) to win their second straight, improving to 10-4 and 3-1 inside the University Athletic Association. The field goal percentage is the best shooting performance in nearly five years for an Emory squad and is tied for the eighth-best single game mark in team history. The loss snaps CWRU's 12-game winning streak, dropping the Spartans to 12-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Senior Matthew Schner led the team in scoring once again, finishing with 15 points as he was one of four Eagles to reach double digits. Schner added a game-high seven rebounds and doled out six assists, tied for the team lead. Both freshman Albert Fallas and junior Max Fried registered career highs with 14 and 12 points, respectively, while senior Nick Stuck filled the stat sheet with 11 points, six assists, six steals and four rebounds.

In comparison, the Spartans shot 39.3% (24-for-61) for the game and had three players finish with 10 points or more, led by forward Cole Frilling's game-high 24 points. Guard Mitch Prendergast scored 18 points with Ryan Newton contributing 10 off the bench.

Fallas and the Eagles came out of the gates red-hot, shooting 68% from the floor and were 10-for-14 from three-point distance as they outscored the Spartans 45-29 across the opening 20 minutes. Fallas went 4-for-4 from beyond the arc as he had 12 of his 14 points in the half. Senior Romin Williams scored all eight of his points in the first half as he knocked down all three of his shots including two from long range.

Emory maintained its distance in the second half, never seeing the lead dip below seven points until a CWRU three pointer made it 74-70 with 2:07 left to play. The Spartans had a chance to cut it to one possession with 1:30 remaining but a big-time rejection by junior Mason Johnson kept CWRU within four. Schner came through with the dagger three pointer with just over one minute to play before Stuck went 2-for-3 from the line during the final minute to clinch the win.

The Eagles travel next to Pittsburgh, PA to close out the UAA road weekend Sunday afternoon at Carnegie Mellon University. Tip-off is set for 12:00 PM.
