Men's Basketball Win Streak Snapped at Chicago, 84-79

The No. 18 ranked Emory University men's basketball team saw its eight-game winning streak snapped Sunday afternoon, falling on the road to the University of Chicago 84-79.

Senior Matthew Schner tied his career-high with 31 points including 20 in the second half but it was not enough as the Eagles fell to 16-5 on the season and 9-2 overall. The Maroons were led by Brandon Beckman who poured in 21 of his career high 29 points after halftime, leading Chicago to its third straight conference win and now stand 9-12 and 4-6 in UAA action.

Beckman and Schner went toe-to-toe in the second half, almost matching point-for-point but two separate solo runs by Beckman help put the game away late in the second half.

With Emory in front 51-49, Beckman reeled off 11 consecutive points for UChicago including a four-point play that gave the Maroons a five-point advantage with 10:19 remaining in the game.

Emory was threatening with five minutes to go only down four but Beckman then produced the next eight points for the Maroons, including consecutive threes to make it 79-70. The Eagles drew near at 82-79 in the final minute as Schner scored seven of the Eagles points during the 9-3 run but that was as close as Emory would get.

Schner finished 13-for-26 including 3-for-8 from behind the arc to lead the Eagles in scoring for the 14th game in a row. Seniors Nick Stuck and Romin Williams each contributed 11 points while freshman Cale Martens chipped in with eight.

Emory returns to Atlanta to begin a three-game stretch to end the season with all games being played at the Woodruff PE Center. The Eagles host #24 Case Western Reserve Friday night with the opening tip set for 5:30 PM.
