2022-23 Men's Basketball Season Recap

2022-23 Men's Basketball Season Recap

With a mix of veteran presence and newcomer flair, the Emory University men's basketball team once again reached the postseason, extending the nation's longest active postseason streak to 10 consecutive trips in the NCAA tournament.

The Eagles won 17 games for the 12th straight season, going 17-9, as they secured an at-large berth to the NCAA field of 64. Eight of those wins came in the vaunted University Athletic Association conference as the Eagles finished third at 8-6 – the 13th straight season Emory was one of the top three finishers in the league standings.

Strengthened by a returning group featuring Mason Johnson, Cale Martens, Albert Fallas and Logan Shanahan to go along with electrifying rookies including Benjamin Pearce and Jair Knight, the Eagles raced out to a 14-3 start including a 2-0 mark in the UAA/NESCAC Challenge, notable non-conference wins over a NCAA-bound Sewanee, Maryville and Connecticut College, and a 5-1 start to the league with overtime wins over Case Western Reserve, Brandeis and Chicago.

A back-half slide however that saw the Eagles go 1-4 pushed the team back on the postseason bubble. With two games remaining, Emory hosted Brandeis on Senior Day needed a win. On an afternoon where the team honored their seniors, it was the rookie Pearce that came through as he sank arguably one of the biggest shots of his young career, draining a three-point dagger with 0.8 seconds left to down the Judges and saved the Eagles' season. Emory rode the high of Pearce's winner into a 10-point win over Rochester in the finale, sealing an at-large bid to the tournament.

For the first time in three tournaments the Eagles were sent out on the road during the opening weekend, traveling to Hampden-Sydney to for a four-team pod featuring H-SC, Farmingdale State and eventual national champion Christopher Newport University.

Emory was matched up against the host Tigers on opening night and put up a battle in front of the raucous home crowd. A one-possession game for most of the second half ultimately fell the way of the Tigers as they won by four despite a 19-point effort by Pearce.

The night was one of 13 occasions where Pearce led the Eagles in scoring as he established a new freshman program scoring record with 468 points (18.0 PPG). To go along with his scoring pedigree, Pearce dished out 117 assists, totaled 36 steals and grabbed 103 rebounds as was honored by three different outlets. The UAA tabbed him as the league's Rookie of the Year and a member of the First Team while he was selected to the All-Region Second Team by both NABC and d3hoops.com.

Johnson rounded out his Emory career with a stellar senior campaign where he notched career-best figures in scoring and rebounding while leading the team in blocked shots. He joined Pearce with All-UAA honors by earning a spot on the Second Team. Knight added All-UAA acclaim with Honorable Mention status after posting 11.2 PPG in 26 games. He finished as the team leader in steals, third in rebounding and awoken the WoodPEC with numerous thunderous dunks all season long.
