The Emory University men’s soccer team recorded its
10th-straight double-digit win total during the 2011
campaign, finishing the season with an overall record of
10-8-0.
The Eagles played a number of close games throughout the season,
including 12 that were decided by one goal, and four
double-overtime affairs. Each of Emory’s last 10 games
was decided by just one goal.
After an uncharacteristic 0-3 start to the season, the Eagles
battled back to win six of their next seven games, outscoring
opponents 16-6 during the stretch and recording five
shutouts.
The Eagles played their best soccer of the season during their
University Athletic Association (UAA) games, finishing third in the
conference with a 4-3-0 record. Emory entered the final game
of the season in a three-way tie for first-place in the UAA,
following three-straight conference wins against the University of
Rochester on the road, and Brandeis University and New York
University at home. However, the Eagles suffered a 2-1 loss
to Carnegie Mellon University on a goal in the final 10 minutes of
play, ending the team’s hope for a UAA Championship and berth
into the NCAA Championships. Each of the Eagles’ seven
UAA games during the year were decided by one goal, including three
double-overtime games.
Emory finished the season ranked 95th among Division III
teams with a 0.39 shutout percentage, recording seven shutouts
during the season, three of which came in UAA games.
For the second-straight year, junior Andrew
Natalino led the Eagles in points with 16, finishing the
season with six goals and four assists. The defender, who was
the only Eagle to start all 18 games during the season, was named
to both the all-UAA first team and the all-South Atlantic Region
second team for his efforts during the year.
The Eagles’ offense was also aided by the emergence of
freshman Dylan Price, who became just the sixth
player in the program’s history to earn all-conference honors
with fewer than nine starts during the season. Price finished
the season with a team-leading seven goals and 15 total points,
along with ‘golden goals’ against Covenant College and
NYU. He was just the fourth player in Emory history with two
‘golden goals’ in a single season.
Sophomore Andrew Goldblum started the final six
games of the season in goal for the Eagles, finishing the year with
a 4-2-0 record, two shutouts, and a team-best 0.79 goals-against
average. Junior Alex Wong also spent time in
goal for the Eagles during the campaign, making a season-high nine
saves during the Eagles’ 1-0 win over the University of
Chicago on October 1st. Wong finished the season
with a team-leading 31 saves over 793 minutes played and four
shutouts.
Emory was also recognized for its academic success during the
season, as the squad was presented with the NSCAA Team Academic
Award. In addition, Wong was named to the Capital One
Academic All-District Team for his success both on the field and in
the classroom.
