Emory Men’s Soccer Drops Sonny Carter Invitational Opener to Methodist

Emory Men’s Soccer Drops Sonny Carter Invitational Opener to Methodist

The Emory University men's soccer team outshot its opponent for the third-straight game, but once again fell short, dropping a 2-0 decision to Methodist University in the opening game of the Sonny Carter Invitational on Saturday.

The Eagles finished the game with 17 total shots, including a team-best three from freshman Dylan Price, and two on goal from junior David Garofalo.  Six of Emory's 17 shots were on goal, compared to just three of Methodist's five attempts.

However, after a quiet first half, during which neither team recorded a shot on goal, a long run down the sideline from Methodist's Eric McGinnis in the 49th minute drew Emory keeper Aram Keteyian out of the net, and set up a cross over the middle to Pat VanCura, who was able to score his first goal of the season.

Down 1-0 in the 70th minute, Emory picked up one of its best opportunities to score in the contest, after sophomore Andrew Jones was fouled just outside the box.  On the ensuing free kick, junior Andrew Natalino launched a shot on goal, but Methodist keeper Kyle Beach made a diving save, and sophomore Ben Dhiman's shot off the rebound went above the crossbar.

Just five minutes later, McGinnis provided the Monarchs with an insurance goal, receiving a Chris Ryan pass off a free kick in front of the net, and converting his shot for a score, his third of the season.

Beach turned in a strong effort in goal for the Monarchs, making six saves en route to the shutout, including a number of diving blocks.

With the loss, Emory dropped to 0-3-0 on the season, while Methodist improved to 2-0-1 for the campaign.  The Eagles will wrap up the Sonny Carter Invitational tomorrow against Rowan University at 1:30 PM.
