Late Goal By Jones Keeps Emory in UAA Lead

Late Goal By Jones Keeps Emory in UAA Lead

Emory University junior Andrew Jones saved the day for the Eagles with an 86th minute goal off a corner kick from senior David Garofalo, as the Eagles forced a 1-1 double overtime tie with the University of Rochester to remain atop the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings.

With just under five minutes remaining in the game, Garofalo sent his corner kick into the box, where Langton deflected it towards Jones.  The junior was able to send a sliding shot past the Rochester keeper and into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

The assist was the fourth of the weekend for Garofalo, who notched a school-record tying three assist in Friday night's win over Case Western Reserve, and now leads the team with six helpers this season.  It was the second assist of the season for Langton.

With the victory, the Eagles remained in first-place in the UAA with a 2-1-1 record in conference play, and are now tied with fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellon, ninth-ranked Brandeis and 20th-ranked NYU.  Emory is 7-5-2 overall this season.

Emory's offense produced some of the best opportunities in the first half, including a chance for Alex Scott in the fourth minute of play, as the senior took a shot from inside the six-yard box after a long throw in from Jeffrey Cochran, but Rochester goalkeeper Scott Garfing was able to get a hand on the ball, deflecting it for the save.  The Eagles would finish the first half with a 9-1 edge in shots, a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal, and a 2-0 bump in corner kicks.

Scott would have another strong opportunity early in the second half, when he put himself in position again to head a ball in off a set piece, this time a free kick.  However, his shot hit off the far post, and the game remained scoreless at the time.

Rochester would break through for the opening score of the game in the 68th minute, when a pair of passes from Andrew Sheridan to Ben Keeton to Jack Thesing allowed Thesing, the Yellowjackets leading scorer, to send a shot past Eagles' keeper Abe Hannigan for his eighth score of the season.  The score remained 1-0 until Jones' goal in the waning minutes of regulation.

Rochester kept pressure on the Eagles' defense in overtime, holding a 7-2 edge in shots during the 20 minutes of extra time.  Yellowjackets' midfielder Max Eberhardt took the best chance of extra time, sending a screaming shot towards the upper corner of the goal, but Hannigan made a diving stop to preserve the tie.

Rochester stands at 1-0-3 in conference play, tied for fifth-place with Washington University (Mo.) and one point behind Emory, Carnegie, Brandeis and NYU for first in the UAA.  The Yellowjackets are 7-2-3 overall this season.

Sunday also marked 'Senior Day' for the Eagles, as the team honored it's seven graduating players prior to the start of the game – Garofalo, Nick Jones, Langton, Alistair Moore, Andrew Natalino, Scott, and Alex Wong.  Over the past four season, the Eagles' senior class has helped the team 43-20-6 record.

The Eagles will wrap-up their home schedule on Friday, October 19th against a non-conference opponent in Covenant College.  The game is slated for a 7:00 PM start at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
