Texas-Tyler Rallies to Upend Emory Men's Soccer, 5-4, in Double Overtime

The Emory University Men's Soccer team opened up to a 3-0 lead in the first half but could not hold on for the win as the University of Texas-Tyler rallied from the three-goal deficit to defeat the Eagles, 5-4, in double overtime in the first game of the Sonny Carter Invitational at the Woodruff PE Center on Saturday night.

Sophomore Moustafa Khattab opened the scoring with a sensational goal to put the Eagles in front 1-0 at the 30:26 mark of the first half. Khattab spun around two defenders, dished the ball to the outside to junior Jason McCartney who then crossed it back to Khattab at the 18 and was able to put it past the Patriots goalkeeper.

Freshman Jun Tsuru pushed the Eagles ahead by two less than four minutes later as he pushed the McCartney feed past the keeper from close range. Fellow newcomer Michael Carragher made it 3-0 Emory with 2:59 remaining in the opening half as he scored from off the pass from classmate Christian Meyer.

Texas-Tyler took control of the game in the second half as the Patriots found the back of the net four consecutive times over the course of 10 minutes and 48 seconds including three goals in the span of one minute and 40 seconds. Erik Macias finished from right inside the box before Leandro Fernandez knotted the score at 3-3 with a pair of tallies 46 seconds apart. The Patriots went in front in the 56th minute as Lucas Pereira scored off the pass from Fernandez.

Sophomore Aidan Datené notched his first career marker with just over five minutes remaining in regulation as he headed one past the UTT goalie following an Adam Ferguson free kick.

The teams remained scoreless until the 105th minute in double overtime as Lutth Tchitembo netted the golden goal to give UT-Tyler the victory.

Freshman Jonathan Whyte fell to 0-1 between the posts as he played the final 37:19 in relief of starter Graham LaBran-Boyd. Whyte allowed one goal while making four saves. LaBran-Boyd let four in and did not make a save.

The Eagles will look to rebound tomorrow evening as they host Maryville College at 7:00 PM on day two of the Sonny Carter Invitational. The Scots were 3-2 winners over Oglethorpe University earlier on Saturday afternoon.
