Men's Soccer Shuts Out Sewanee, 1-0, for Third Straight Win

The Emory University Men's Soccer won its third consecutive game on Wednesday night, defeating Sewanee University 1-0 to improve to 5-2 on the season. With the loss, the Tigers slip to 4-3-1.

Junior Adam Ferguson had the lone offensive production for either team in the contest, scoring the game's only goal in the 15th minute. Classmate Jason McCartney provided the perfect pass to his teammate, dishing it from the endline on the right side back to the penalty spot where Ferguson finished it home, banking it in off the left post.

The Eagles had a chance to extend their lead in the second half with a flurry of shots right in front of the net but could not punch it in. In the span of twenty seconds, sophomore Aidan Datené had his shot through traffic saved by the Sewanee keeper followed by junior Christian Meyer who put the rebound on target that also saved before junior Austin Mirabella had a third opportunity to find the back of the net which was also stopped by the Tigers.

Sewanee applied pressure in the final minute of action with a pair of shots that were sent away by junior keeper Jake Deuel. First, Marco Randazzo turned and fired towards the left corner from the penalty spot but Deuel made an excellent one-handed diving stop before getting up and making another outstanding save on the rebound attempt from close range by Zach Birkhead to preserve the 1-0 win. Deuel finished the contest with three saves to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Eagles will be off until next Tuesday night when the Lions of Piedmont College travel to campus for a non-conference matchup. The game is set to start at 7:00 pm at the Woodruff PE Center.
