Men's Soccer Runs Unbeaten Streak to Five with 4-0 Victory at Covenant

Four different Eagles registered a goal as the Emory University Men's Soccer team breezed past Covenant College, 4-0, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon in Lookout Mountain, GA. With the victory, the Eagles run their unbeaten streak to five games to improve to 9-3-1 overall while the Scots fall to 5-10-2 on the season.

The teams remained scoreless until the final minutes of the first half when junior Michael Carragher put Emory on the board with his second goal of the campaign. Carragher corralled the loose ball right at the top of the 18 before taking one step and firing a shot past the diving Covenant goalkeeper to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 advantage in the 39th minute.

Emory added two more tallies within the span of 55 seconds early in the second half to increase their lead to 3-0. Junior Christian Meyer one timed a shot inside the 18 off the deflection from sophomore Michael Stier to make it 2-0 in the 49th minute. Moments later, junior Jason McCartney netted his team-leading seventh goal of the season to put the Eagles up by three. McCartney had a close attempt that was saved by the Scots' Jonathan Crossman but McCartney was able to grab the rebound and put it into the back of the net off his left foot.

Junior Cody Gardiner made it 4-0 Emory in the 57th minute, scoring on a nifty diving heading attempt following the long throw in by freshman Jimmy Tricolli. The goal was the second by Gardiner on the season while the assist was the first collegiate point of Tricolli's career.

Emory outshot Covenant 23-5 in the contest, including a 10-2 margin in shots on goal, thoroughly controlling possession throughout the match. Junior Jake Deuel made two stops over the course of 83 minutes to earn his seventh victory of the year. Freshman Trevor Stormes made his collegiate debut in relief of Deuel, playing a clean final 6:55 between the posts.

The Eagles will return to the pitch this Friday against Brandeis University in the first of three straight UAA contests on the road. Kick off from Waltham, Mass. is set for 7:30 pm.
