Men's Soccer Scores Four Unanswered to Earn First UAA Win

The Emory University men's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn its first UAA win of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating Brandeis University 4-2 in Atlanta.

The Eagles scored four answered goals including three in the second half to complete the comeback over the Judges, boosting their overall record to 4-6-4 and 1-3 in league play. For Brandeis, the loss puts them at 4-6-2 and 0-4 in conference action.

The Judges' Sancho Maroto Tobias in front early as he scored both of the visitors' goals in the 25th and 28th minutes. Tobias' first score came at the 24:52 mark as he perfectly timed Rainer Osselmann-Chai's corner kick, darting in front of the Eagles' Keirnan Skelly to tap it into the far back corner. He would add another to his ledger at the 27:25 mark, beating Skelly from close range off the double assist from Max Horowitz and Toby Marwell.

Emory began to mount its comeback in the 36th minute as senior Alejandro Gomez got one back before the halftime break. Gomez and senior Parker Morford linked up with a back-and-forth with Morford sending a nice pass to the center of the box where Gomez one-timed it to the left corner.

Junior Sebastian Rincon found the equalizer just 1:22 into the second half as he fired a blast from 23 yards out through the sea of Brandeis defenders. Senior Trey Rielly put the Eagles ahead with a bomb of his own less than five minutes at 51:03, finishing from 30 yards out following the feed from Gomez. Senior Joe Beare put the final touch on the win as he scored with 2:39 remaining, pushing his shot past the keeper from inside the 18 off the centering feed from Gomez.

The two sides had plenty of opportunities to find nylon in the contest with the Judges and Eagles combining for 49 shots including 24 on target. Skelly registered a season-high nine saves, posting several key stops to earn his second win of his young career.

Emory will be back home next Saturday, October 21 as the team rounds out the non-conference schedule with Roanoke College. Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM at the WoodPEC.
