Men's Soccer Ties #11 Washington & Lee in Sonny Carter Finale

Men's Soccer Ties #11 Washington & Lee in Sonny Carter Finale

The Emory University men's soccer team played to its second straight scoreless draw Saturday evening, closing out the Sonny Carter Invitational with the stalemate against No. 11 ranked Washington & Lee University in Atlanta.

The two teams combined for 21 shots with 10 being on frame in the scoreless bout. Five different Eagles recorded a shot on target while senior Peter Wagner picked up his second clean sheet in as many days, totaling five saves in the contest.

Wagner's second save of the day was his most crucial as he denied WLU's Grant McCarty with a diving block on a penalty kick in the 14th minute. For the Eagles, they controlled most of the remainder of the half with a 6-1 margin in shots over the final 31 minutes with freshman Nick Carrano and senior Cobi Promislow putting shots on goal but were turned away.

The Eagles did not muster another scoring chance until the 65th minute when Promislow had the closest opportunity for either team in the game. He stepped up for a free kick but saw the strike hit off the crossbar with the Generals' keeper there to deny the rebound.

With both defenses holding strong, the Generals and Eagles managed just one shot each over the final 13 and a half minutes of play. WLU had one more threat in the 81st minute but were stopped by Wagner while junior Ryan Hayes sent the final shot attempt of the game high and wide with 90 seconds to play.

Emory will head to the Pacific Northwest next weekend as the team is set for games against Pacific Lutheran and Willamette on Sept. 8th and 10th.

At the conclusion of the tournament, 17 players across the four participating schools were named to the Sonny Carter Invitational All-Tournament Team.
